Advancing Women in Mediation

Since the passing of UNSCR 1325 in 2000 the role of women in peace and security has been on the agenda of the international community. The four pillars set out in the agenda have structured international efforts to promote both the participation of women in peace and security initiatives, and also the ways in which international law and policy engages with women in conflict. Enhancing the effectiveness of mediation as a form of conflict resolution is a core element of the United Nations Sustaining Peace Agenda. Drawing effective linkages between Women Peace and Security and the Sustaining Peace Agenda is crucial to respond to modern day conflicts.

This site profiles research on the particular theme of increasing the representation of women as mediators across the spectrum of conflict resolution.

From the women mediators working at the community level, to women’s coalitions and negotiators, to high level women mediators, a more system-wide approach to supporting women in mediation could yield better results in the long run.
